Minnesota has set a single-day record for number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases, with the state health department on Friday reporting 2,287 confirmed cases and 10 probable cases. The report includes 13 more deaths, six of whom were residents of long-term care.

The record number of cases comes amid a record number of tests completed. The MDH reported 43,616 diagnostic PCR tests and an additional 772 antigen tests for a total of 44,388 completed tests.

Those tests were from 23,428 people tested. As if often the case, patients are tested multiple times, so the more accurate reading for test positivity rate is based on the total number of people tested (9.80%).

The positivity rate when total cases is divided by total tests is 5.17%. Health experts say positivity rates need to be at around the 5% mark to control the spread of the virus.
