THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD,  THIS WEEK,   MADE THE GREENBUSH TRIBUNE IT’S OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER.  THE TRIBUNE OFFERED THE ONLY BID,  AT  $ 3.99 PER COLUMN INCH;   THAT’S  NEARLY THREE TIMES HIGHER THAN THE COUNTY PAID THE TRIBUNE AS IT’S OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER IN 2019, WHEN THE RATE WAS  $ 1.35  PER COLUMN INCH.

THERE WAS NO BID FOR A SECOND PRINTING,  SO THE COUNTY WILL CONSIDER OPTIONS.  THE ROSEAU TIMES-REGION  (THE COUNTY’S ONLY OTHER NEWSPAPER)  SAYS IT WILL CHARGE  $ 7.65 PER COLUMN INCH.

THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE REQUIRES COUNTIES TO NAME AN OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER AND DO A SECOND PRINTING IN ANOTHER NEWSPAPER.

 

THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL,  THIS WEEK,  APPROVED SUPPORT FOR THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MAKING THE PORTION OF HIGHWAY 89 IN THE CITY AN URBAN SECTION.

THERE WOULD BE A LOCAL COST-SHARE FOR THE CITY AND COUNTY CONNECTORS TO THE HIGHWAY.

 

THE CLOSING OF BRICK AND MORTAR STORES IS BECOMING A MAJOR CONCERN FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES.

SHOPKO CLOSED ALL OF IT’S STORES LAST YEAR,  LEAVING TOWNS LIKE ROSEAU WITHOUT A BIG BOX GENERAL STORE.

 

TWENTY MINNESOTANS HAVE BEEN APPOINTED TO TWO YEAR TERMS ON THE  DNR’S  WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES OVERSIGHT COMMITTEES.

AMONG THE APPOINTEES TO THE WILDLIFE COMMITTEE IS PHOEBE COLE OF WARROAD.

BOB WELSH,  THE DNR’S  WILDLIFE OPERATIONS MANAGER,  SAYS THEY SOUGHT PEOPLE WITH  DIVERSE INTERESTS.

 

STATE LAWMAKERS ARE BACK IN ST PAUL IN JUST OVER A MONTH,   AND SUPPORTERS OF RESTRICTIONS ON FLAVORED TOBACCO ARE ASKING LEGISLATORS TO MAKE THAT A PRIORITY THIS SESSION.

A MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SURVEY SHOWS A  54% INCREASE IN YOUTH VAPING OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS.

TEN MINNESOTA CITIES,  INCLUDING DULUTH,  HAVE ADOPTED RESTRICTIONS FOR SELLING FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS;   BUT DULUTH MAYOR EMILY LARSON SAYS THE PRODUCTS CAN STILL BE SOLD TO ADULTS.

ADVOCATES ALSO WANT THE STATEWIDE AGE TO BUY TOBACCO TO BE RAISED TO  21.

 

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DARYL  EKLUND OF RURAL ROSEAU ARE SATURDAY MORNING AT  10:30  AT THE FREE LUTHERAN CHURCH OF ROSEAU.   VISITATION IS AN HOUR PRIOR.

DARYL EKLUND WAS  66.

 

A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR WENDY GEISENHOF IS SATURDAY MORNING AT  10:30  AT THE WARROAD SENIOR LIVING CENTER CHAPEL.

WENDY GEISENHOF WAS  61.

 

A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR ANGELA WYNNE IS FRIDAY,  JANUARY 31ST   (4 PM)  AT THE BADGER BAPTIST CHURCH.

ANGELA WYNNE DIED NEW YEAR’S DAY AS THE RESULT OF FATAL GUNSHOT  WOUNDS;   A RURAL BADGER MAN IS CHARGED IN HER DEATH.

 

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR VIRGINIA BREKKE OF GREENBUSH  (AND FORMERLY OF STRATHCONA)  ARE SATURDAY MORNING AT TEN  AT BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF GREENBUSH.    VISITATION IS TOMORROW EVENING,  AFTER SIX,  WITH A SEVEN O’CLOCK PRAYER SERVICE AT COLLINS FUNERAL CHAPEL IN GREENBUSH.

VIRGINIA BREKKE WAS  70.

 

MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR JIMMIE  VISTAD OF HIGH RIDGE,  COLORADO  (AND FORMERLY OF ROSEAU)  ARE NEXT THURSDAY,  JANUARY 16TH   (11 A.M.)  AT FIRST UNITED LUTHERAN CHURCH IN ROSEAU.

JIMMIE VISTAD WAS  61.

 

MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM WALZ HAS AUTHORIZED  STATE DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR ROSEAU,  KITTSON,  LAKE OF THE WOODS AND MARSHALL COUNTIES FOR DAMAGE FROM HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODING IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER OF   2019.

ROSEAU COUNTY ESTIMATES  MORE THAN ONE MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGES.

THE STATE DISASTER ASSISTANCE CONTINGENCY ACCOUNT COVERS 75% OF ELIGIBLE REPAIRS.

 

THE MINNESOTA WHEAT GROWERS ASSOCIATION HAS A SMALL GRAINS UPDATE MEETING THIS EVENING AT GENE’S IN ROSEAU.
