PAUL COLSON, OWNER OF JAKE’S NORTHWEST ANGLE RESORT, WAS FORCED TO ADMIT THAT IT WAS A WASTED SUMMER DUE TO FLOODING WITHIN THE RAINY-LAKE OF THE WOODS WATERSHED, AND CLOSED UP SHOP IN EARLY JUNE. HE IS NOW EXPLORING A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE LAKE OF THE WOODS CONTROL BOARD – THE CANADIAN ENTITY THAT CONTROLS WATER LEVELS ACROSS THE WATERSHED – FOR VIOLATING A 1925 TREATY BETWEEN THE US AND CANADA GOVERNING WATER LEVELS ON LAKE OF THE WOODS. HE CITES TWO ARTICLES OF THAT TREATY, ONE ADHERING TO THE MAXIMUM WATER LEVEL THAT LAKE OF THE WOODS SHOULD NOT EXCEED, AND ANOTHER THAT INDICATES THE RATE AT WHICH WATER SHOULD FLOW OUT OF THE LAKE, AND HOW BOTH OF THOSE WERE MISMANAGED.

THE BADGER SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ARRANGING PUBLIC INPUT SESSIONS FOR WANTS, NEEDS, PRIORITIES, STRATEGIES, AND ACTIONS FOR BADGER’S LONG-RANGE PLAN. THE FIRST SESSION WILL BE HELD IN PERSON ON TOMORROW AT 7 PM IN THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA. A SECOND SESSION WILL BE OFFERED BY ZOOM ON MONDAY, JUNE 27 BETWEEN 7-8 PM.

THE GRAND FORKS HERALD HAS A STORY ON THE THIEF RIVER FALLS BREWERY THAT OPENED IT’S DOORS ON WEDNESDAY OF THIS WEEK. RIVERS AND RAILS BREWING COMPANY OVERLOOKS THE RED LAKE RIVER AND NEARBY RAILWAY TRESTLE. LIKE MANY CRAFT BREWERIES, IT PUTS A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON BEING LOCAL, FROM THE INTERIOR DESIGN, TO NAMES OF THE BEERS, AND THE ESTIMATE THAT 80& OF THE INGREDIENTS USED TO MAKE THEIR BEER ALL COME FROM WITHIN A 60-MILE RADIUS.

DEAN BYFUGLIEN, GLENDA PHILLIPE, ALAN JOHNSTON, KEVIN BRUCE, AND SHANE HORNER ARE THE FIVE CANDIDATES WHO FILED FOR THE ROSEAU COUNTY COMMISSIONER DISTRICT 1 POSITION, AND THEY WILL RUN IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION. THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD IS SEEKING APPLICATIONS FROM THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN FILLING THAT SEAT UNTIL THE END OF THIS YEAR. THE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL WOULD BE APPOINTED TO THE POSITION. APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THIS FRIDAY. THE COUNTY BOARD WILL THEN HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY, JUNE 28 TO ALLOW THE PUBLIC OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE INPUT ON PROSPECTIVE APPOINTEES. THE SEAT OPENED DUE TO THE DEATH OF JOHN HORNER, WHO WAS CHAIR OF THE COUNTY BOARD. AT A RECENT COUNTY BOARD MEETING, ROGER FALK AGREED TO SERVE OUT THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR AS BOARD CHAIR.

A 22-YEAR OLD BEMIDJI WOMAN WAS KILLED, AND ANOTHER WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED, IN A ROLLOVER EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING JUST WEST OF GONVICK. THAT ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON HIGHWAY 92 AS HER SUV WAS TRAVELING EAST. THE DRIVER, MORGAN AVENSON WAS NOT WEARING HER SEATBELT AND WAS KILLED. THE PASSENGER, 29-YEAR OLD KENDRA PLATOW, WAS WEARING HER SEATBELT.

A FUNERAL SERVICE FOR JEROME E. HELSTAD OF ROSEAU WILL BE HELD THIS MORNING (11 AM) AT SPRUCE FREE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN ROSEAU, VISITATION IS AN HOUR PRIOR. INTERMENT WILL BE HELD AT NORLAND CEMETERY IN SALOL. JEROME WAS 92.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR CORK STOSKOPF WILL BE HELD TOMORROW AT MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH IN ROSEAU (4 PM). VISITATION WILL BE HELD THIS EVENING (5-7 PM) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN ROSEAU, WITH A 7:00 PRAYER SERVICE. CORK WAS 74.

THE WANNASKA LIONS ARE SERVING A PANCAKE BREAKFAST THIS SUNDAY (8 AM-1 PM) AT THE WANNASKA COMMUNITY CENTER. PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN THE UKRAINE.
THE LIONS RECENTLY PRESENTED THREE ROSEAU GRADUATES WITH $500 SCHOLARSHIPS. THOSE RECIPIENTS WERE BRIANA LALIM, ALEX WENSLOFF, AND KAYLA JACOBSON.

THE ROSEAU AMERICAN LEGION POST 24 IN ROSEAU WILL HOLD A FLAG DISPOSAL CEREMONY FOR UNSERVICEABLE AMERICAN FLAGS NEXT MONDAY AT 6 PM. IF ANYONE HAS A WORN OR UNSERVICEABLE FLAG TO BE DISPOSED OF, THEY CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE LEGION BEFORE THAT DATE.
