Two Minnesotans charged for breaking Canadian COVID-19 act

07/08/2020

Two Minnesota residents are facing $1,000 fines after failing to comply with Ontario’s Mandatory Quarantine Act, after making stops in the Town of Fort Frances.

The Rainy River OPP say on June 24, the two individuals entered Canada from the United States through the Fort Frances port of Entry. Police did not specify, but the two must have been allowed an exemption to cross the border due to essential reasons.

Along with other stipulations, the two were instructed by Canada Border Services Agency staff to drive directly to their destination and remain there for 14 days immediately.

The OPP say both individuals failed to comply with the Mandatory Quarantine Act, and were observed making stops in the Town of Fort Frances.

As a result, 66-year-old David Sippell and 65-year-old Anne Sippell of Excelsior, Minnesota, have been charged with Failure to comply with an order, prohibiting or subjecting to any condition the entry into Canada. The charge carries a $1,000 fine.

The OPP is reminding the public to follow the act at all times to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and help to protect the public and frontline staff.

Travel restrictions for all Canadian international border crossings will remain in place until at least July 21. All optional and discretionary travel is restricted.
