THE JOINT DITCH 72 AUTHORITY, WHICH INCLUDES MEMBERS OF THE ROSEAU AND KITTSON COUNTY BOARDS, HELD A PUBLIC HEARING THIS WEEK ON A PETITION FOR A 160 ACRE PARCEL IN THE NORTHWEST PART OF THE COUNTY TO BE INCLUDED IN THAT DITCH SYSTEM .THE JOINT DITCH AUTHORITY APPROVED, ALONG WITH A ONE-TIME OUTLET FEE OF FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.

 

THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD APPROVED THE BID OF PETERSON SHEET METAL FOR BOILER REPLACEMENTS IN THE COURTHOUSE AND THE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER. TOTAL COST FOR THOSE REPLACEMENTS WILL BE ABOUT 145 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

 

THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD, THIS WEEK, ISSUED A PROCLAMATION IN APPRECIATION OF COUNTY STAFF. GOVERNOR WALZ HAD DECLARED TUESDAY COUNTY STAFF APPRECIATION DAY IN MINNESOTA.

 

THE GRAND FORKS HERALD FEATURES A STORY ON THE CONTENTIOUS ROSEAU LAKE PROJECT, AS INTERESTED PARTIES AWAIT THE RELEASE OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT WORKSHEET NEXT MONTH. THEY HAD HOPED TO RELEASE THAT THIS MONTH. THE ROSEAU LAKE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO REDUCE FLOODING IN THE LAKE’S BASIN AND TO ENHANCE WILDLIFE, WATERFOWL AND OTHER SPECIES. A GROUP CALLED THE ROSEAU LANDOWNERS COALITION, MADE UP OF ABOUT 50 FARMERS, WAS FORMED TO STOP THE ROSEAU LAKE PROJECT, AND ARE ASKING THAT THE DNR BE REQUIRED TO MAKE AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT ON THE PROJECT.

 

MINNESOTA HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE RECOMMENDING, BUT NOT REQUIRING, THAT ALL STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND STAFF WEAR MASKS IN SCHOOLS THIS FALL, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE VACCINATED. THAT’S IN LINE WITH NEW GUIDANCE FROM THE CDC.  AGAIN, THESE WILL TAKE THE FORM OF RECOMMENDATIONS AND NOT MANDATES. A MAP OF RECENT COVID-19 TRANSMISSION IN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA SHOWS LAKE OF THE WOODS COUNTY IN RED, NOTING HIGH TRANSMISSION, AND ROSEAU COUNTY IN ORANGE INDICATING SIGNIFICANT TRANSMISSION.

 

A FUNERAL SERVICE FOR BETTY LARSON OF ROSEAU WILL BE HELD TUESDAY, AUGUST 3RD (2 PM) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN ROSEAU. VISITATION WILL BE MONDAY EVENING (5-7) WITH A 7:00 PRAYER SERVICE AT HELGESON’S. BETTY LARSON WAS 78.

 

ALONZO J. RAMIREZ OF WARROAD DIED RECENTLY. HE WAS THE SON OF ROBERT AND BARBARA RAMIREZ.

 

A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL FOR RON SCHWEHR OF ROSEAU WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY (10:30 AM) AT SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH IN ROSEAU. VISITATION WILL BE THURSDAY (5-7) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN ROSEAU. MILITARY HONORS BY THE ROSEAU MEMORIAL HONOR GUARD. RON SCHWEHR WAS 75.

 

ANOTHER CONCERT COMES TO ROSEAU’S RIVERVIEW PARK THIS EVENING, THAT FEATURES A CELTIC GROUP FROM THE RED RIVER VALLEY. MOE AND MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH YOUTH ARE SERVING A FUNDRAISING MEAL.

 

IN A FOLLOWUP TO YESTERDAYS STORY ON THE SUSPECTED FENTANYL OVERDOSE DEATH OF AN ERSKINE WOMAN, TWO MEN HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH THIRD DEGREE MURDER. 29-YEAR OLD GEORGE PIATKOFF OF ERSKINE AND 43 YEAR OLD ANDRE METCALF OF CROOKSTON WERE BOTH CHARGED ACCORDING THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE. PIATKOFF AND THE DECEASED, KATIE FLICK, WERE FOUND UNRESPONSIVE IN A VEHICLE NEAR FERTILE ON MONDAY EVENING. TWO YOUNG CHILDREN WERE IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME.

 

28-YEAR OLD DAVID DONNELL JR, OF REDBY, IS CHARGED IN FEDERAL COURT WITH ONE COUNT OF SECOND-DEGREE MURDER AND FOUR COUNTS OF ASSAULT WITH A DANGEROUS WEAPON IN THE DEATH OF OFFICER RYAN BIALKE, THE RED LAKE NATION OFFICER THAT WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY THIS WEEK.
