THIS WEEK, REPRESENTATIVE MICHELLE FISHBACH INTRODUCED THE LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION GRAND PROGRAM ACT, MEANT TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN TO CONSIDER A CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE ACT WOULD PROVIDE GRANTS TO STUDENTS PURSUING THEIR FIRST DEGREE IN A LAW ENFORCEMENT OR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM.

THE MINNESOTA HOUSE MOVED QUICKLY TO APPROVE $1 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TO COVER AVIAN INFLUENZA-RELATED EXPENSES THROUGH THE LEGISLATURE’S EASTER BREAK. A JOINT STATEMENT WAS RELEASED BY A NUMBER OF HOUSE REPUBLICANS, INCLUDING JOHN BURKEL OF BADGER, SAYING “THEY WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH COLLEAGUES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE TO STOP THIS WAVE OF AVIAN INFLUENZA AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO POULTRY FARMERS.”

THE PRESENCE OF AVIAN INFLUENZA IN A NUMBER OF NORTH DAKOTA COUNTIES, INCLUDING CASS COUNTY, HAS FORCED THE RED RIVER ZOO TO TAKE BIRDS OFF DISPLAY. THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY MOVED ALL POUNTRY TO OTHER AREAS, BUT THIS NOW INCLUDES ALL BIRDS INCLUDING CRANES, EAGLES, RAVENS, AND OTHERS.

ROAD CONDITIONS WERE REPORTED AS SNOW COVERED AND ICY AT THE TIME.

NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA’S MOOSE POPULATION CONTINUES TO HOLD STEADY AFTER SOME TOUGH TIMES IN THE EARLY 2000’S. THE MINNESOTA DNR REPORTED THE POPULATION SURVEY AT 4,700 MOOSE, VIRTUALLY UNCHANGED FROM THE 2020 SURVEY. THE POPULATION HAD BEEN AS LOW AS 2,700 IN 2013.
